The main complications of wound healing are:
  • Static or non-healing wound.
  • Haemorrhage.
  • Seroma formation.
  • Infection.
  • Sinus tract formation.
  • Herniation.
  • Wound dehiscence.
The factors that above can lead to wound healing complications and failure. These must be assessed and corrected as appropriate if they are implicated in disrupting the normal wound healing process.

Causes of delayed wound healing and wound complications include:
  • Inadequate management of local wound factors (infection, inflammation, contamination, necrotic tissue, moisture imbalance, tissue movement).
  • Poor surgical technique.
  • Drain complications.
  • Poor dressing and bandaging technique.
  • Inadequate management of patient and systemic factors.
  • Patient interference.
  • Lack of owner compliance.
