Fetotomy is the technique of dividing a dead fetus (which cannot be delivered) into small pieces that will easily pass through the birth canal.
Fetotomy or Cesarean section?
- Fetotomy should be done only when the fetus is known to be dead
- Cesarean section must be used when the fetus is known or believed to be alive
- However, cesarean section can be considered when the dead fetus is either deformed or is in a maldisposition that cannot be corrected or it is too large and unable to be removed from the uterus in the normal way.
