Nyandarua Governor Francis Kimemia officially commissioned a 5,000 litres-per-hour milk pasteurisation processing line at the Ol Kalou Dairy plant in Kaimbaga Ward Ol Kalou sub-county.
The Kshs. 120 million milk processing plant will enable the company to process and package milk in readiness for the market instead of relying on other processors, thus increasing the profit margin for the farmers.
The governor has hailed the investment, noting that it will grow the rural economy through value addition and continue creating more jobs for the youth.
The county government gave the farmers company KShs. 2 million for the second phase of the expansion that will involve installing a processing line for long-life milk and also targeting the processing of 100,000 litres of milk. Animal feed formulation and production will also be factored in.
The Governor also pledged that Ol’Kalou Dairy will be roped in the ECDE milk supply programme that will see resources ploughed back to the county.
Currently, Ol Kalou Dairy receives between 35,000 litres and 70, 000 litres of milk daily with an average of 50,000. The dairy is paying Kshs. 38 per litre, matching what other big milk processors pay to farmers.
