Classification and mode of action of commonly used antibacterial drugs. The penicillins and the cephalosporins are collectively known as the b-lactams. The sulphonamides and the diaminopyrimidines are often combined; for example, trimethoprim and sulfadiazine may be combined in a single preparation.
